Major Requirements

Students desiring to major in Art History should complete a major application form in consultation with the Director of Undergraduate Studies

Once admitted, students should be in regular contact with their advisors and maintain an up-to-date academic record in the History of Art and Architecture administrative office.

Art History Major Requirements

Lower Division Art History Surveys

(16 graded credits)

Majors planning to specialize in European and American Art History must take the introductory sequence ARH 204, 205, 206 (History of Western Art I, II, III) and at least one course from the introductory sequence in Asian art: ARH 207, 208, 209, 210.

Majors planning to specialize in Asian Art History must take three courses in the introductory sequence in Asian art (ARH 207 or 210, 208, and 209) plus one survey in Western Art (ARH 204, 205, or 206)

Majors planning to specialize in Architectural History must take the introductory sequence ARH 314 and 315 (History of World Architecture I, II), and at least two of the following: 101, 204, 205, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210.

Upper Division Courses

(32 graded upper-division credits - comprising concentration and elective requirements)

Majors are required to take eight upper-division courses in ARH; at least four must be taken at the 400-level. Within this there is a cluster requirement in which two upper-division courses must be taken in any three of the following five course areas (24 credits):

  1. ancient Mediterranean (Greek, Roman, Near Eastern)
  2. medieval (early Christian, Byzantine, early medieval, Romanesque, Gothic)
  3. Renaissance and Baroque
  4. modern (18th century through contemporary)
  5. Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian)

The remaining two upper-division courses (8 graded credits) are electives and may be taken in any area.

ARH 300: Critical Approaches to Art History Study

(4 graded credits)

 

All Art History majors must take this class, usually during fall term of junior year.

Studio Art (4 credits)

Majors must take a minimum of 4 credits in fine arts (studio-based classes, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, or design).

Language (2 years)

Majors must complete the language requirement as described under the University’s Bachelor of Arts Requirements.  Students are urged to consider future plans and to consult with their ARH department advisor when selecting a language for study. Ideally, the language chosen should be one that is useful for art historical study in one’s area of specialization.

* All art history courses must be taken for letter grades and must be passed with a C- or better.
