Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Cheng received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2009.  Her research interests are in the artistic practices and theories of the European avant-garde in the interwar period. She has published articles and book chapters on Symbolist art; primitivist aesthetics; Dada and Surrealism. She is especially interested in the link between modernist primitivism and what she calls the anthropological aesthetics of the European avant-garde, which is the subject of her current book project, Masks, Puppets and Chimeras: Toward An Anthropological Aesthetics of the Avant-Garde, 1915-1945.  She is equally also interested in the possible points of encounter between avant-garde art theories and art historiography. Amidst her ongoing projects is an article comparing the anthropological interests of Aby Warburg and André Breton.
