Department of the History of Art and Architecture

Welcome to the Department of the History of Art and Architecture

Welcome to the Department of the History of Art and Architecture website. The department offers courses and degree programs leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. In conjunction with the Arts and Administration  program and drawing on the considerable cultural resources of the UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, we also offer a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies, as well as a New Media and Culture Certificate. Encompassing the art and architectural traditions of Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Pacific, our curriculum provides a broad perspective for a critical understanding of art and its relationship to history and culture. The undergraduate program prepares students for graduate studies in the Art History; it also leads to opportunities in the business world, art museums, and galleries. Our graduate program emphasizes both breadth and depth, and it is characterized by close working relationships between students and faculty. Our graduate students have gone on to prominent careers in teaching, the museum world, library science, and visual resources management. Comprising of faculty who are leading authorities in their respective fields, the department prides itself on the very high quality of the student experience at all levels.
